Women have been shaping the cannabis industry before there even was an industry. After all, marijuana and hemp have been cultivated and used medicinally and recreationally for thousands of years. With women often playing key roles in areas such as agriculture, textiles, food procurement, and healing, which has impacted cannabis life, culture, and history.
Women have entered the cannabis industry determined to shape policy, educate peers, and make an impact in today’s growing market. We are still in the early stages, and there is still room for women to enter the cannabis industry and cement their places as early industry trailblazers. As cannabis use continues to expand, the number of business opportunities has also exploded, allowing people of all backgrounds, nationalities, and experience levels to start their own cannabis projects and businesses. Breaking the grass-ceiling in the cannabis industry won ‘t happen overnight, but through conversations, mentorship and support we can help the cannabis industry include more women and empower them to grow and continue making great strides in all aspects of cannabis growth, production, and sale.
As women, we need to band together and share our successes in this industry, support each other, learn from each other, and continue to destigmatize female cannabis use, perceptions, brands, ownership, and professional success.
